Marijuana poses the least health risks among all recreational drugs, new research concludes.
A recent study published in Scientific Reportsquantified the risk of death associated with the use of a various controlled substances. Researchers found that marijuana is far less deadly, if at all, compared to illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
By comparing lethal doses of each substance with the average amount that a person normally consumes, the study calculated that pot is roughly 114 times less deadly than alcohol, which ranked first in overall risk involved, beating out hardcore drugs like heroin, cocaine, and meth.
The research confirms that risks associated with cannabis have been severely overestimated in the past, whereas the risks related to alcohol have been underestimated.
The news should come as extra relief for parents, as a recent survey suggests that more teens are using marijuana instead of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs.
